The Windows Installer (previously known as Microsoft Installer from where the .msi extension was born, was codenamed Darwin) is a system service for installing and managing applications on Microsoft Windows Operating Systems. It is considered as an engine which can trigger, control and manage software (also widely called as MSI packages) existence at a workstation. Windows Installer is an operating system service that allows the operating system to manage the installation process. The technology is divided into two parts that work in combination: a client-side installer service (Msiexec.exe) and a package file (.msi file). Windows Installer uses the information contained within a package file to install the application. The first product ever shipped based on Windows Installer Technology was Microsoft Office 2000 Products. The latest stable version of Windows Installer is 4.0, only available on Windows Vista Operating System however a Beta Program was recently announced for next release, Windows Installer Beta 4.5.
